IRON MOUNTAIN, Mich. (WLUC) – A new clinic is providing hospice services to the Iron Mountain area.
Marshfield Home, Health and Hospice received its final certification last fall. The clinic serves patients with a life-limiting illness: six months or less to live.
Registered Nurse Administrator Tina Zarcone says a team of caregivers visits patients in their homes within about a 40-mile radius of Iron Mountain. She says the exact services they provide, which include nurses, chaplain services, and a social worker, are figured out on a case-by-case basis.
“All of that is taken into account with the family needs and requests, and that’s done, and those goals are set mutually, between the patient, family, caregivers and the hospice,” Zarcone said.
She says that providing hospice care is extremely rewarding for both caregivers and families, a sentiment echoed by Social Worker Emily Zambon.
“Another thing that I’ve heard a lot is ‘I wish I would have done this sooner,’” Zambon said. “A lot of families wish that they would have come to us sooner, realizing how much it has helped them to have people coming into their home and helping them.”
Zarcone says the clinic is in need of volunteers: even a couple of hours a week can make a big difference.
“You don’t have to have a medical background to do that, you just have to have a caring heart, a willingness to serve others,” Zarcone said. “Some of our volunteers just participate in office work, somebody who’s had an office background they can come and do mailings and help us on that end.”
If you choose to volunteer, she says to expect support and training throughout the process. If you’d like to volunteer, you can reach the clinic at (906) 776-1925.
