WILMINGTON, N.C. (WECT) – Atrium Health submitted an application to the state for a Certificate of Need to open a full-service hospital in Wilmington, which would expand access to healthcare in New Hanover County.
According to Atrium Health, over 200 local physicians and clinical providers across southeastern North Carolina support the filing due to the current lack of hospital capacity and additional healthcare options.
“I have practiced in southeastern North Carolina for over 20 years, and I have watched this community grow faster than our healthcare system can keep up,” said Slade Suchecki, a family physician practicing in Southport. ”My patients wait too long for specialists. Some drive hours for care; they should be able to get close to home.”
Atrium Health says that Wilmington’s rapid population growth is heavily fueling demand for more hospital beds, more doctors and a new facility.
According to the release, the proposed hospital could include:
- Cancer care
- Neuroscience programs
- Cardiovascular care
- Training for medical students in the area
- Clinical research
Anyone wishing to share their support is encouraged to send a letter to the North Carolina Certificate of Need Section.
