ROANOKE, Va. (WDBJ) – As Juneteenth celebrations come to an end, one museum in Roanoke is highlighting the importance and history of Black excellence in healthcare.
The Harrison Museum of African American Culture in Melrose Plaza hosted activities throughout the weekend centered on the theme, “Health Is Freedom.”
Events included discussions on mental health, injury recovery, CPR and AED practices, and medical research.
One keynote speaker said that throughout history, Roanoke has seen its share of inequities in health care.
“I think it’s really important when we talk about research to also realize that Black people are often underrepresented in research. And so that’s something that we’re actively striving to change, because changing that will also change the health disparities and the structural racism that happens in the healthcare system,” said Carilion Clinic Director of Surgical Research, Sydney Webb.
Webb shared a message for younger generations interested in pursuing a career in health care, saying, “Never underestimate your willpower and potential.”
