LOUISVILLE — A webinar series by the Caribbean and North America Council for Mission (CANACOM) returns on Thursday with a focus on extreme weather.

“Seasons Unraveled: Extreme Weather and Health” is the latest in “From Gardens to Guardians,” a climate change series being hosted by CANACOM, a network of reformed churches in the Caribbean and North America that includes the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.).

The third of six webinars, Seasons Unraveled will air at 7 p.m. Eastern time on Thursday, June 18, and will feature Dr. Dale Rankine, an honorary research fellow in the Department of Physics at the University of the West Indies at Mona, Jamaica. He has co-authored national and regional climate change reports, such as the State of the Caribbean Climate (2020), and is a member of the Climate Studies Group Mona, which has a lengthy history of research.

The purpose of the series, which started in April, is to give faith leaders, health professionals and non-governmental organizations the chance to work together to do the following, according to CANACOM:

  • Share evidence-based knowledge to support climate education and community resilience building.
  • Explore the moral and spiritual dimensions of the climate crisis.
  • Underscore the shared responsibility for the care of Creation.
  • Design strategies to protect God’s Creation and promote justice for all.

“The goal is to raise awareness and inspire action,” said Lisett Cruz, a young adult representative to CANACOM from the Operations Support Team of Presbyterian Life & Witness.

Jennifer P. Martin, Education in Mission Secretary, added, “We would love people to share information (with their groups) and exchange experiences that they have garnered in the establishment of climate resilience projects.”

The series continues through September. The schedule includes “Waters, Wings, and Wild Things: Creation Care for a Living World” on July 23, “Called to Cultivate: Human Health and Hope in a Changing World” on Aug. 20, and “Sacred Pause: Sabbath Practice for Climate Anxiety and Healing” on Sept. 17.
